It may not seem like it at times, but did you know that newborn babies sleep for around 18 hours a day? Throughout their early development, it’s vital to make sure that your baby is getting a good night’s sleep. A solid sleep is, after all, essential for brain development and growth (for tips on getting your baby to sleep read our interview with Nicole Johnson from The Baby Sleep Site).

Of all the things parents try to get their little ones to sleep, one of the most vital, and simple, is to ensure they have a comfortable place to sleep. One essential piece of that puzzle is choosing the right crib sheets.

Crib Sheet Fabrics

Because crib sheets are made with various fabrics, it’s important to note that not all crib sheets are created equal. It helps to find out just what fabric your crib sheets are made from, and which fabrics promote the best sleep.

Read on for my review of the different crib sheet fabrics available and recommendation of the best fabric to help promote a solid sleep for your baby.

Bamboo & Cotton Crib Sheets (our pick)

Silky smooth and luxurious to sleep on, the combination of bamboo and cotton offers the added benefit of being 100% breathable.

Retaining it’s quality and shape no matter how many times you wash them, bamboo and cotton crib sheets provide that extra level of cloud like softness to help promote comfortable, sound sleep. Additionally, if your baby is already used to being wrapped in our swaddle blankets, the crib sheets offer the same familiar, comforting, and buttery soft feel.

Bamboo and cotton crib sheets offer an abundance of advantages that make them a truly superior product.

Pro's

  • bamboo crib sheets provide a higher level or softness than any other option
  • bamboo fabric is known to retain it’s quality even after many washes
  • bamboo fabrics are extremely breathable - ideal for warm nights.

Con's

  • many retailers claim their crib sheets are made from bamboo but in reality they are using a cheap, machine-made synthetic that is not environmentally friendly.

Pure Cotton Crib Sheets

Cotton is a classic crib sheet option. Because cotton is a breathable fiber, 100% cotton sheets are often the standard when it comes to choosing a crib sheet.
One of the primary benefits of cotton is that it will help to keep your newborn cool during the Summer and warm in Winter.
The downside of cotton is that if you don’t opt for a high thread count, the fabric may feel stiff, rough or scratchy at first. They will soften after a couple of washes, however, and as an added bonus, they are durable. 100% cotton sheets are considered hypoallergenic, which means that your baby won’t have any kind of skin irritation.
Cotton sheets are easy to find and have a variety of prices, depending on thread count and where you shop.
Pro's
  • good in winter and summer
  • easy to find, available in stores and online
  • comes in a variety of colors

Con's

  • high thread count needed for babies sheets, these are more expensive and harder to find.

Polyester Crib Sheets

Polyester crib sheets are a budget-friendly option. However, because they are not as breathable as cotton, one of the drawbacks of polyester is that your baby may get hot and uncomfortable, especially in warmer weather.

Pro's

  • cheap / inexpensive
  • easy to find, available in stores and online

Con's

  • low quality
  • not breathable

Flannel Crib Sheets

Flannel crib sheets are ideal for keeping your baby warm in colder climates, but do keep in mind that in warmer climates and during the summer, flannel crib sheets should be folded away and left until next winter! Baby will overheat in warm weather if sleeping on flannel sheets.

Pro's

  • warm in winter, good for colder climates
  • durable so easy to stow away until the next winter

Con's

  • pilling easily occurs in poorer quality flannel
  • not breathable
  • can overheat babies quickly
