Did you know that one in ten babies ends up in the NICU? It’s something that every expecting parent dreads, but during a recent visit to Kapi'olani Medical Center’s NICU, I was inspired by the hospital’s incredible work that supports so many Hawaii families.
As we walked the hospital’s halls, our tour guide Amanda (a proud Coco Moon mom!), shared stories of keiki like Keolamau and moms like Marcie who are alive and thriving today because of the critical care they received at Kapi'olani. In addition to the more than 1,000 babies cared for in Kapi'olani’s NICU every year, the medical center also transfers in over 250 newborns a year from across the state and Pacific that are in need of emergency care.
That’s especially comforting to moms like me who gave birth on the neighbor islands, where access to critical care services are limited. When I gave birth to my sons on Maui, the comfort of knowing Kapi'olani was a short flight away if we needed it was one less thing for me to worry about. With the most advanced neonatal care and as the only hospital in the state with physicians specializing in newborn care on-site 24-hours a day, Kapi'olani’s dedicated focus on mother and newborn care makes it safer for all of us to have a baby in our isolated island home, no matter where you decide to give birth.
Kapi'olani has been changing the lives of Hawaii families for more than a hundred years. That’s why I’m excited to announce that in celebration of our 5-year anniversary, we will donate 1% of our sales proceeds to the Kapi'olani Medical Center’s NICU all year long. With your support, a portion of every Coco Moon Hawaii sale will go to toward life-saving care for Hawaii’s next generation and their families.
Reaching 5 years of Coco Moon feels like a big milestone. Since we launched our Giving Back program in 2017, we’ve donated over 30 local nonprofits that impact Hawaii families and our way of life. In this anniversary year, I wanted a way to give back to our community of supporters by making an impact on as many newborns and Hawaii families as possible. I’m excited to partner with Kapi'olani to make our goal a reality.
