We're excited to kick off 2026 by featuring local illustrator and mama, Kelsie Dayna, as our January Māmā of the Month!
Kelsie is the creative force behind our playful Reef Rascals print—a bright and colorful design that brings the magic of underwater adventures to life. But beyond the characters and colors, Kelsie's story offers a candid look at navigating work, motherhood, and the in-between moments.
Below, she shares a bit about how her art career began, what she's learned through motherhood, and the values she hopes to pass on to her keiki.
Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and what inspires your artwork?
Aloha, my name is Kelsie Dayna. I’m an artist and illustrator from Oahu. I guess you could say I got a late start to my career in art. I never went to art school. I never even pursued a job in art. The catalyst for me was really when I lost my job during the pandemic. It allowed me an opportunity to really explore the creative side of me that I knew was in there all along but never had the courage to explore. My art uses bright and bold colors. I like to keep it fun and playful. The goal of my art is really to tell stories and build community.

What's something surprising you’ve learned about yourself through motherhood?
Honestly, I thought I was a good multitasker before kids, but after kids that skill set grew exponentially. I mean it's juggling everything from soccer practice to grocery shopping, to client projects, to “which kid has to wear what color to what function?” It's a lot and I know a lot of other moms can relate to this. But we wear many hats as mothers, and I think that has helped me grow my confidence as a mom.
What values or experiences from your childhood/growing up on Oahu do you hope to pass on to your keiki?
For me it's just about the simple things. You know, going to the beach, spending time at the park. I feel like in this digital world, it's hard to get kids away from screens sometimes. So anytime I can spend with my kids outside of that is super important to me.
What advice would you give to other mamas who want to start an art-based business?
The best advice I can give to somebody who’s looking to start an art or creative business is just to start. Taking that first step is the hardest part. I mean, it took me 30+ years and a job layoff to make it happen. So, yes juggling that with kids makes it more c challenging, but it means that you gotta be more creative in how you make it happen. I used to do all my creative work at night, like when the kids were in bed. It was the only quiet and peaceful time I had. So, it’s just about being flexible, being adaptable, being consistent, and being passionate about it.
