Meet Kalei Mau

A proud native of Kahaluʻu, Hawaiʻi, Kalei Mau is a former professional volleyball player, part-time musician, and now—first-time mama. Her journey spans the world, from international courts to quiet mornings grounding in the grass with her baby girl. With a deep love for family, culture, and gratitude, Kalei shares how growing up in Hawai‘i shaped her identity and how motherhood has transformed her perspective.

Rooted in Hawai‘i

For Kalei, being Hawaiian is more than heritage—it's a way of moving through life. “Being from Hawaiʻi shaped me into being strong, independent, and just grateful for everything that surrounds me,” she shares. Growing up surrounded by the mountains, ocean, and community taught her to find richness in the simple things. “It keeps you grounded. When you go out into the world, you have to have a type of confidence—and for me, that came from knowing who I am and where I come from.”

Kalei speaks of aloha not as a saying, but a value system you carry daily: treating people with kindness, being present, and cherishing each day as a gift.

A Life in Volleyball

Though she didn't start playing volleyball until age 15, Kalei quickly fell in love with the sport. After playing at a small private high school, she earned a collegiate spot at the University of Minnesota, then transferred to the University of Arizona—where she credits coach Dave Rubio with helping shape her into a well-rounded outside hitter.

Her professional career took her from Puerto Rico to France and eventually to the Philippines, where she found not only a vibrant volleyball community but a second home. “I fell in love with the Philippines—the competition, the people there, the love of the game.” She ended up staying for nearly six years, building a meaningful chapter of her career and life. During COVID, she returned to Puerto Rico, then joined the U.S. pro league—until her heart called her to start a family.

“Here I am, a retired volleyball player and a new mommy… and the adventure never ends.”

Growth Through the Game

Kalei's experience playing internationally added a whole new dimension to her game. Competing in different countries allowed her to adjust to a variety of playing styles, speeds, and techniques—ultimately sharpening her instincts and expanding her volleyball IQ.

“Playing internationally helped me grow so much. By the end of my career, I had this confidence that came from knowing the game inside and out,” she shares. “Those last few years were just fun—stepping on the court knowing I could rise to any occasion.”

Advice for Aspiring Athletes

Kalei's message to young athletes from Hawai‘i is simple but powerful:

“Believe in yourself. Work hard. Go get it.”

Becoming a Mama

Now, with baby Honua in her arms, Kalei is entering a brand-new season.

“What I’ve loved most is just staring at my baby,” she says. “She's a combination of myself and the person I love.” Motherhood has reshaped her priorities. “It's health, happiness, and safety. All the little things take a back seat when someone is depending on you.”

And it's changed the way she sees herself too: “It's really hard to think negatively about yourself when you have a little girl watching your every move.”

The Meaning of Honua

While pregnant, Kalei often found peace grounding outside in her yard, barefoot on the grass. One day, she prayed for guidance on her daughter's name—and the next morning, she had it.

Honua means Earth in Hawaiian. “Earth gives me everything I need. It provides. And it resembles the place I love the most. ʻĀina is everything. So now, I have a little Earth with me all the time.”

Legacy in Motion

Whether she's remembered for her power on the court or her love at home, Kalei wants her legacy to be grounded in intention.

As an athlete: “Hard-working, uplifting, always making people better.”

As a mama: “Selfless, loving, forgiving, and always positive.”
